Kushiro is located at 43'N. Lat., and 144'E. Long, on the southeastern coast of Hokkaido. It is about 400 km from Sapporo, Hokkaido's largest city, and it takes about 4 hours by express train to make the trip. The great Kushiro Marsh spreads north of the city to the Akan Mountains, which can be seen in the distance. Kushiro is also famous for its Tancho Cranes.
